Frequently Asked Questions

Are your hotspots only in Atlanta?
Currently our hotspots are mainly in Atlanta because that’s where we live, but we have the infrastructure in place to put them anywhere in the world. Of course shipping charges may be higher to Asia, Europe, and the subcontinent. Also, check your local regulations if you live in a Communist country or are under a theocratic dictatorship, as some places have restrictions on the free flow of information.
How long does the installation take?
We will mail you a self-install kit with the access point and all your promotional and instructional materials. In most cases you just plug it in and it works. We can work with you over the phone to get it installed if you have problems. A typical installation takes less than half an hour.
How long will it take to get my self-install kit?
As soon as we get your OK we ship your kit out the same day. You should receive it in 2-4 days. We can arrange for quicker delivery if desired.
How much area will the access point cover?
The typical range inside a typical building is about 100 feet. It will go through wood beam floors and standard drywall walls. Concrete and steel cut the range significantly.
What about security? Is this safe?
Our technology allows customers to get out to the internet but won't let them into the rest of your network. We firewall off all the traffic. Keep in mind that most hotspot equipment can't make that claim. You don't want randoms snooping around your POS system.
What about restricting the sites that people go to?
At present, this is not possible, but among all our hotspots and our thousands of users, we have never had anyone complain about someone viewing objectionable material from a hotspot. We can also kick users off the network and disable their login if you have problems with anyone.
How big is the device?
4.375" wide by 5.5" high by 1.125" deep, or roughly the size of 2 CD jewel cases.
What do I need on my end?
You need internet access and an open Ethernet port on your router or hub for our device to plug into. If you don’t have an open port, you can purchase an Ethernet hub for about $20 at CompUSA or Office Depot. You also need a standard power outlet within 6 feet of the WAP location.
Do I need a static IP address?
It’s not necessary, but is preferred.
Do I need more than one IP address?
You only need 1 public IP address, but you must have a router that can provide multiple private IP addresses. Most ISPs routers do this.
Do you recommend an ISP?
For most Atlanta businesses we recommend either Bellsouth Business DSL with a static IP address, or Covad.
How much does it cost to get Internet access if I don’t have it already?
Business class DSL or Cable usually cost about $70/month. Make sure you get a plan that allows you to share out your Internet connection, or you could be violating your Internet service agreement.
Is there a contract to sign?
The contract is for 12 months, payments monthly. Feel free to peruse our Letter of Agreement (PDF, 76KB).
Can’t I just do this myself?
Sure, and many people have. Heck, a lot of folks change their own oil. But, the benefit of being a Ripple WiFi HotSpot is that you are part of a community. Your location will be listed on our web site and submitted to WiFi sites so that people can find you. You may be mentioned in press articles about the initiative. One of our locations was chosen by a newspaper for a photo shoot for an article on the free WiFi initiative. We also provide you with door stickers and instruction cards. Ripple WiFi Hotspot users are fanatical, and look for other Ripple WiFi hotspots. Best of all, you never have to worry about support or maintenance when you’re a Ripple WiFi HotSpot.
